Getting Better

blog sales Mar 12, 2018

If you think back to a time when you experienced a little one walking for the first time, you’ll remember how wobbly they were and how many times they fell down. Yet before you knew it, the little bugger was running around the room like a pro. This is human nature; to learn something new and to master it. It’s all about getting better.

When did this change though? I see business owners and salespeople resist this cycle and settle. People that have been in their selected fields thinking they have twenty years of experience when in fact they have one year of experience repeated nineteen times! How can I say that? Because they’re not getting better. They’re producing the same results as they did before.

If you were given the same test in school ten times, you would do better at it each and every time. Your tenth test would have a much better grade than the first. That’s the way it’s supposed to be. That’s the way it’s supposed to be in...

Engaging Your Team

blog leadership Mar 05, 2018

I constantly hear complaints of staff that just show up to collect a check and how hard it is to find and keep good team members to replace them. Today, I’m going to bat for all the workers out there because I don’t believe anybody starts a job thinking about how they can screw up your business. I believe that most employee issues are caused by management. Creating and engaging team members is easy once you know how.

An engaged team member is a person that is emotionally, mentally, and physically engaged in your business. They see themselves as part of the business and measure their success by the business’s success. The most engaged a co-worker will ever be to your business is on their first day. What you do on that day determines the continued engagement and long-term success of that person. You need to set the stage for the rest of their time with you with four easy steps.

  • Clear. You’ve got to be clear on the values you run your company by,...

Busy, Busy, Busy

blog focus Feb 26, 2018

There’s something I know about you right now and that’s you didn’t get everything done yesterday that you wanted to. You’re extremely busy and you run out of daylight before you run out of to-dos. The fact is you’ll always have more on your plate than you can handle. This isn’t about being negative, it’s about being honest. The cool thing is there’s still a way to accomplish your dreams even with all this noise in your life.

The saving grace in your hectic day is discerning between tasks that are important and tasks that are urgent. Important tasks are typically not deadline driven and yet are the tasks that when completed move you closer to achieving YOUR goals. Because there’s no sense of urgency, you tend to meet and deal with important tasks from a responsive mode allowing you to be creative and thoughtful. Urgent tasks are deadline driven and typically help others achieve THEIR goals. When completed,...

Survive or Thrive

blog mindset Feb 19, 2018

Every morning you wake up you've got a choice to make. You choose whether to survive or thrive. You have to realize that a great life doesn’t happen accidentally or magically, it happens intentionally. If you don’t start your day by deciding how that day will end, then you’re allowing circumstance and feeling to determine the quality of your day for you.

Surviving is all about making it to the end of the day, about paying the bills, and about going through the day on cruise control. The end result is laying your head on your pillow at the end of the day filled with regret and despair because inside you there’s a voice telling you that you’re capable of so much more.

Thriving, on the other hand, is all about the destination. It’s taking the time to set a goal big enough for yourself that it scares and excites you, one that pushes you and your team to become and do more than you’ve ever done before. You need to realize that life doesn’t...

Abundance

blog mindset Feb 12, 2018

Where does abundance come from? Are some people just lucky and have it fall into their laps? Or is there more to it than that? I came across a quote from American author, Thomas Dreier (1884 – 1976) that answers this very question. “The life each of us lives is the life within the limits of our own thinking. To have life more abundant, we must think in limitless terms of abundance.”

What a powerful quote! According to Mr. Dreier, abundance is within each of us and it’s up to us to tap into it, first with our thinking and then with our doing. This is a common truth spoken from Confuscious all the way to today. Stop waiting for life to get better! When you do that, you’re like a dog under the table waiting for scraps. Circumstance is a cruel mistress that plays you.

If you want your life better you have to make it so. You do that by first changing your thinking; how you see the world and what’s happening to you must change. The world...

The Power of Being Authentic

blog sales Feb 05, 2018

The last thing this world needs is another polished, perfect, and professional salesperson. You don’t need to have a perfect presentation followed up by one hundred different closing tactics guaranteed to overcome every objection known to man. The best thing you can bring to any sales situation is yourself, and you do that by being authentic.

There’s a misconception that a professional salesperson is there to make the sale, period. They’re thought to be pushy, manipulative, flashy, and very smooth. All sizzle and no steak. That’s why very few are proud to be in the profession of sales. And that’s exactly what this world doesn’t need. What this world and your customer needs is someone that is passionate, caring, and authentic. Someone that puts the needs of the customer ahead of theirs and is there to help. This is how selling should be. Instead of trying to push or force a sale, remember what Zig Ziglar said, “You can get everything you...

How Are You Acting?

blog focus Jan 29, 2018

As you go through your day, are you aware of how you’re acting? No, I’m not talking about performing your favorite scene from Romeo and Juliet, I’m talking about how you’re coping with what happens to you and around you through the day. When something happens you have a choice to be reactive or proactive.

A lot of times, being reactive to a situation is the norm. When you react to something you’re not in control; the very act of reacting is the result of a stimulus in your life, cause and effect. When you’re reacting, you’re living your life through your emotions. You’re allowing circumstance to drive your decisions. This is where the seed of victim thinking is planted and springs to life. Your focus is on the problem, how it’s affecting you, and how unfair it is. Many times being reactive is caused by being so engrossed in doing things or being so checked out that you don’t see what’s happening around you....

Groove or Rut

action blog Jan 22, 2018

When you’re in the groove everything just seems to be going right. You feel great and you’re achieving great things. You’re on fire and loving life. If you’re not careful, you’ll end up turning that groove into a rut. You don’t want to be in a rut. This is where each day is filled with mind-numbing activities and the only goal you have is to make it to the end of the day or to the weekend. Where are you today? You in the groove or in a rut? Being the curious guy I am, I decided to dig into this and figure out what causes each and how to turn the rut back into a groove.

I discovered that when you’re in a rut you’re focused on the activities of the day. You’re focused on what you’re doing. The monotony of performing the same tasks every day has put you in a trance and you’re drifting. This is a sad state to be in because you’re allowing your present moment of disengagement to become your past.

When...

The Power of Perspective

blog mindset Jan 15, 2018

Your life is the way it is because of one very simple thing. The meaning you give to what happens to you determines the quality of your life. If you want a better life, you need to see these events from a different perspective.

The greatest lesson I ever received on perspective was from my grandson Brandon when he was four years old. One day he and I were playing in his room, sitting on the floor and racing his little cars on this rug that had roads in its’ design. When all of a sudden he laid down on the floor and continued to roll his car around the rug.

“Brandon, are you tired?”, I asked.

“No, Papa.”, he answered.

“Then why are you laying down?”, I inquired.

“Because it’s different.”, was his reply.

So, I tried laying down too and the whole landscape changed. Instead of looking down at the rug and cars, now I was looking at the side of the car and the rug. The change in perspective was...

Become a Magnet

action blog Jan 08, 2018

Have you ever been around someone that made you feel like the most important person in the whole world? Someone that you love to be around because your day is brighter because of them? If you step back and observe, you’ll find that you’re attracted to them like metal to a magnet. What you’re seeing isn’t magic, it’s a mindset and it’s a game changer for the those that can master it.

What they do is put the needs of others before their own needs. I know this sounds counterintuitive but hear me out. When you’re thinking of yourself first, everything you do is with the thought of what you can get. Your thoughts and sentences start with me or I. And then there’s the sense of fairness that comes with a self-serving attitude where you count everything you do for others and demand that you get at least as much in return. You do this in business and in relationships. I know what’s best for my customer, so they should do it. Or,...
