How Finding Your Cause Transforms Your Team

Today I want to talk about teams and causes. Having a cause is a critical element in team building. When you don't have a cause, all you're focused on is the lowest level of Maslow's pyramid. It's just survival. You end up with a group of people doing their own thing. That's not what you want.
Some questions that make things easier are the hardest to answer.
Some of the questions that make it easiest for you to run your business are the hardest to answer. Listen to that carefully. Some of the questions when answered are going to make your life and business so much easier. But answering them is hard because it takes putting yourself in places you haven't been before. It makes you confront doubt and fear.
“Where are we going?”
One of the critical questions to ask yourself is “Where are we going? Where are we going as a company? Where are we going and why are we going there?” Once you can understand that, it makes things so much easier. Why? It gets you to create a focus and a direction for your company so that you don't have everyone in their individual boat banging into each other.
You don’t want them thinking you've got to do this and you are the enemy. I can't sell the work if you can’t find it. I can’t do the work if you can’t sell it. This animosity builds up when we have a bunch of individuals doing their own thing.
Know where you are going as a company.
If you have a destination, you know where you are going as a company, and it gets everyone focused on the same thing. Instead of being combative, it becomes collaborative. This is where the advisor asks, “Hey, what can I do to help?”
“What’s important?”
The first thing you need for your team is to know where you're going. Think of any sports team. They all come together with a common goal of winning. Now it might be the game, but more likely it's the championship. Or maybe this year we want to be in the top 10. But it's getting that common cause, that rally cry everyone understands. This is what makes all the difference in the world when you're building a team. This week step back and ask yourself, “What's important?”
Avoidance only makes things more frustrating.
It's avoiding these questions that make it harder every single day. Avoidance makes it more frustrating to the point where you just want to give up. Don't do that.
Ask yourself, “What’s important?”. It could be standing up for a local cause. It could be the S P C A or Habitat for Humanity. Who knows? Everybody wants to know what you are working toward. Your team is looking to work for more than just a paycheck. They want to make a difference. They want to be a part of the bigger picture. And they want to matter.
What do you want to be known for today?
If you were to die tomorrow, what would you want to be known for today? That’s as simple as it gets. Your mission statement must do one of two things or both.
1. To make the world a better place. It could be to make your community a better place.
2. Or you're going to right an injustice.
Every shop owner deserves to feel successful.
That is how you figure out what you are there to do. My mission statement is to make the world a better place, one shop at a time, because every shop owner deserves to feel successful. I gave you my where we're going and I gave you why. That is what drives us. Now understand, I will identify metrics to help me see how well we’re moving forward, but that's a discussion for another time. My mission statement will change every 18 months to two years because as I achieve it, I'm going to create a new one.
So please help us get the word out to all those shops that are struggling. Out to all those shops that don't know any better as they charge the cheapest amount because that's all they think they need. They don't realize it's a race to the bottom. I need your help, so, please share this video.
