The Power of Can't

I hate the word can’t. I didn’t like it when my parents used it, when my teachers used it, when my kids use it, and I don’t like it when you use it. Can’t is a limiting word, it makes your world smaller. It slams the door shut to opportunities right in front of you.

Just because you haven’t been able to achieve a goal or accomplish something doesn’t mean it can’t be done, it means you either aren’t fully committed to your goal or you don’t know how to do it. There’s an enormous difference between “can’t” and “I don’t know how”. One takes potential off the table while the other shows where you need to grow.

To go from “I can’t”  to “I did it!”, follow these four simple steps.

  1. Go all in. Nelson Mandela said, “One cannot be prepared for something while secretly believing it will not happen.” You have to be fully committed to achieving what you’re pursuing. You need to have a really strong emotional reason WHY you’re doing this. It’s not a want in your life, it’s a must. You have to be willing to die for it. When you have that level of dedication, NOTHING will stand in your way for long!
  2. Look to others. Whatever it is you want, someone else has done it. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Study what they did and then repeat it. The other benefit to studying those that have gone before you is it will uncover areas you need to improve.
  3. Learn. From an information availability perspective, there has never been a better time to be alive. Once you’ve uncovered the areas you need to upgrade, there are books, CD’s, personal coaches, online videos, interviews, and podcasts that will give you the information you need. Take advantage of these resources and learn.
  4. Do it. The last step is the hardest of all of them. Now it’s time to apply what you’ve learned through massive action. Don’t be like so many others and get stuck between the learning and the doing. You’re going to feel fear and that’s good because it’s a sign you’re on the right track. Push through the fear and do it anyway because everything you want is on the other side of that fear.

Like the word “try”, remove the word “can’t” from your vocabulary. Know that with the right commitment, knowledge, and action anything is possible. Follow these four steps and show the people around you just how AMAZING you are!
