For Auto Repair Shop Owners: Life is Created Today!

Life is Created Today by Rick White, President 180BIZ

Have you ever felt frustrated because you want grand things to happen and you want the change, but you're just not getting what you could and should be getting out of your life and out of your business? I see so many people that are stumped by what Einstein said. He said, “Insanity is doing the same thing every day and expecting different results”. Well, here's the secret. It comes from a John Maxwell quote that I love. The quote says that your life will never change until your day does. Think about that for a second. Your life won't change until your day does. Your day is where the rubber meets the road. Your day is where you get to create today the things you want tomorrow.  That is amazing.

So, start looking at things a little bit differently. What we tend to do is wait for grand events. And it'll be a great one event. But it's not one event that does it. It's us. It's something done regularly that does it. Typically, you end up with what I call “Round Tuits.”  Oh, I didn't get to it today. I'll get a “round tuit” tomorrow. I'll get a “round tuit” the day after. When you give yourself that break, things never ever change.

So, here's my thought process. Understand that your life is created in your day. If you want a different life, you must have a different day. Here is where I’ll give you a great, simple hack that's will make a difference in your life and your business. You're going to love this. Think of a really big goal that you have for yourself, something really way out there. Then break that goal down to one concrete habit, one concrete task that if you do.  It will make a difference.

Let me give you an example. So if you have a repair shop and you want to grow your fleet business. To sit there and talk about it doesn't do anything. Set up a goal where for every week you're going to visit five ideal fleet clients to grow your business. On Mondays, ask yourself “Who am I going to visit this week? Then start to section it out. Next, start making some phone calls or you just stop in. Now, by Friday you've seen five new potential fleet clients. I guarantee you that by the end of the year, if you do that, you're going to have more fleet business than you know what to do with. I truly believe that every repair shop should have about 20% fleet work. It helps keep the slow times a little busier.

Now that's all you need to do. Your life is created today. Pick one thing. Just one thing that you will do differently that will move you toward one of your goals.

We're in the last quarter of the year. This is not the time to sit and wait for 2020 to end. This is the time to ramp up your efforts. The election, civil unrest, pandemic, doesn’t make a difference in your business.  Stay safe. But don't let the noise out there determine and define what's going on in your business. So, realize that it's the day. Do one thing every day or every week. If you make that a habit, your business will take off.

I would love to see your comments. Tell me what your big one's going to be this year. Use this last quarter as an opportunity to springboard into 2021. Keep up your safety protocols and keep your staff safe. Keep your staff healthy mentally. There's a lot of stress going on. Make sure that your shop is a haven for calm. Keep everyone focused on a common objective and it's going to make all the difference in the world.
