Just ONE Thing
ATTACHED: Is What's Working in Your Shop Holding You Back?
Episode 279
with Rick White, 180BIZ
Good morning. My name is Rick White from 180BIZ, and this is my Just ONE Thing.
So this conversation came up last week in one of my coaching calls, and I really think this is important to understand.
Y'all have heard me say for years, "Be firm on your destination and flexible on the path." You gotta know where you wanna go, and that's gotta be a non-negotiable, right? But you don't wanna get so attached to how you're getting there that you can't change.
Now, I know that sounds really simple, but if that's true, why is change so hard when you know your current path isn't getting you where you wanna go? And I think part of the answer is success itself. Let me explain why.
See, I truly believe... So I want you to understand that I truly believe that success can slowly change your focus. Let me explain.
Most businesses start out with who they're serving and why. They know there's someone they wanna help, there's a problem they wanna solve. There's a result you wanna create, right?
So you know what's going on, and then you figure out what to do, right? What are you gonna do that works for them?
And then you find something that works, so you do it again, and again, and again, and again, and you get really good at it. You build systems around it. You hire people for it.
And slowly, "this works" becomes "this is how we do it," right? Super important.
And I need you to understand that that becomes, right, "This is how we do it," becomes, "This is what we do."
And eventually, "This is what we do" turns into, "This is who we are."
See, without realizing it, your focus has moved away from who and why, who you're serving and why, to the what, to how you're doing it. And now, changing what you do can start to feel like changing who you are. I need you to hear this, right?
Without realizing it, it becomes changing what you do can start to feel like changing who you are.
That's why. I need you to understand, this is where fear enters the picture. If your current what has been successful, you've now got something to lose.
I don't think this is about being in the comfort zone. This is about being in the familiar zone.
See, familiarity is different from comfort. So you may not like where you are, right? You could be frustrated with your team, you're working too many hours, you're not making enough money, and you know something needs to change, but you know this place.
You're familiar with this place. You know this place. You know its problems. You know its pains. You know what tomorrow's gonna look like, and you've learned how to deal with them.
In fact, you've actually become pretty good at operating there. And sometimes what keeps you where you are isn't that you like where you are, it's that you've learned how to live there.
And I need you to understand that the pain you know can feel safer than the possibility you don't.
See, that's the thing. Your current path, man, you got proof it works. The next path, the path that could take you from a million to three million or three million to six million, right?
That doesn't have certainty with it. In fact, it's riddled with uncertainty. You're comparing, "I know what I have," to, "I believe this could be better."
And that's the problem. You naturally fear losing what you already have, right? More than fear missing something you don't have yet.
Every opportunity looks like risk before you achieve the desired result. You don't get proof first. If you had proof, it wouldn't feel like much of a risk.
But don't make the mistake of thinking that staying where you are is risk-free. There is risk in changing, but there's also risk in refusing to change.
Okay, let me rephrase that. Doing more of what got you here isn't gonna get you to where you wanna go next.
The reality is customers change, your team members change, technology changes, markets change, competitors change, and guess what? So don't you.
To achieve the next level in your business development, you must, must be willing to let go of what got you where you are today so that you can determine and develop what will get you to where you wanna go tomorrow.
Now listen, that doesn't mean throwing everything away that's working. It means being willing to question it, to test something different, to learn, to adjust, to get better, and when necessary, let go.
Because what got you here may be the very thing keeping you from there where you wanna go.
So we gotta fall in love with the right thing.
Tony Robbins once, I heard him say, "Fall in love with your customer, not your product." Right?
You gotta stay focused on who you're serving. You gotta stay focused on solving their needs, fulfilling their needs, right? Solving their problems. You gotta stay committed to why you're there, okay?
Stay firm on where you're going, but hold the what, the how you do things, a little looser because your what isn't your business. It's simply, listen to this so clearly, please, it's simply the best path you've found so far.
Because I need you to understand, letting go of what you know, what has gotten you here, it's scary, right? You gotta understand that.
Every opportunity looks like risk in the beginning.
So I want you to look at something in your business, something you've been doing for a really long time, and ask yourself, "If I were starting this business today, knowing what I know now, would I still choose to do it this way?"
We constantly do this here at 180BIZ. We're constantly looking at, how can we do better? How can we better serve our clients? How can we help them with their needs better?
And I'm gonna tell you something straight up. We're willing to throw a hand grenade at everything we've built so far in order to continue serving our clients, in order to become more and more relevant in helping them exactly when they need us.
So this is something that I'm really pushing hard for you as well, okay? Because I want you to, again, ask that question.
If you were starting all over again, knowing what you know now, would you still choose to do it this way? Right? Whatever you're thinking about in your business.
Then ask a harder question.
Am I staying on this path because it's the best way forward, or because I've learned how to live here?
Oof, that one's a hard question sometimes to answer, and this is one we ask ourselves a lot.
Because you gotta be firm on your destination, and you gotta be flexible on your path.
So every opportunity, I just want you to remember this, every opportunity looks like risk when you start out.
It isn't until you achieve the result and you turn around and look back that you can identify it as opportunity.
And sometimes the biggest risk isn't leaving the path that got you here, it's staying on it when you can no longer get to where you wanna go.
Everybody, thank you so much. God bless, and let's rock it out this week, okay? You guys can do this.
Everybody take care. Have a great week. We'll see y'all later. Bye-bye.
