Just ONE Thing
The Olympic Mindset Every Shop Owner Needs
Episode 245
with Rick White, 180BIZ
Good morning. My name is Rick White from 180BIZ. This is my Just ONE Thing. This week, the concept is on Olympics. So here's what I wanna do. I want to show you a video, so I'm gonna share my screen.
Okay, so I'm going to share this with you. And I want you to watch this just for one sec with me. Okay? Watch this.
Look at him. Go. Isn't that amazing? We love the Olympics, Brenda and I.
Changing feet to did not work.
Awkward recovery.
So that's pretty, look at that. He just goes right back into it. So what I want to do is stop sharing. And let's get back into this.
Here's what I really, what really hit me about that wasn't the skater or his skating or anything like that.
He was an amazing skater. If I'm saying that in past tense, his performance was amazing. What I need you to understand is though, is he missed the land, like he missed what he was doing. Does that make sense? He doesn't like slam the ice. He doesn't look good to judge.
He doesn't sit down and just replay it over and over again. In his head, he gets up and continues like nothing happened. Right? And here's what's really cool about this, and this is the lesson for this week. He didn't stop his routine to figure out what went wrong. He finished it. And I need you to understand, this is the principle that I need you to understand.
What I need you to understand is this. Number one, there is a time to analyze and there is a time to execute. Now, the very best business understand this difference. So if you're in the middle of the routine, it's not time to step back and figure out what wrong. It's time to step back and just get it done.
It's time to get the routine finished. It's time to get it done. After the routine, that's when you sit back and you think about it. I need you to understand this. It's completion before contemplation. See, too many people, here's what happens, me included.
Sometimes this is an issue when something goes wrong right in your shop. What happens? Your emotion spikes. You get frustrated. You get embarrassed. You're angry. You're afraid. Right? Whatever that is. But then what happens is you start to get so involved in that emotion that you start to stare at the moment and you start to analyze.
And in the process of doing that, you're shutting down the rest of your day. You're shutting down the rest of what could be. See, it's not making one mistake. It's when you allow that mistake to snowball into two, three, four mistakes. That's when it becomes an issue, okay? But what I want you to be able to do is after everything is done, you've completed your routine, got your day done.
After the rush, after everything's done, your emotions have settled down. Now you start to gain a little objectivity. Right? This is where you become a little bit fairer to yourself and your team. You start to get a little clearer headed and you start to think more strategic, and you are less reactive, and that's what's really, really awesome about this because giving yourself that space between completion and contemplation.
It gives you some distance, and that distance reduces distortion. Now, let's face it, in your shop, you get a comeback. Right? Someone gives you a hard time. A customer gives you a hard time. You miss one of your goals. Team member makes a mistake. Instead of finishing the day strong.
You sit down on the ice mentally, figuratively speaking, and this is where the mistake is because now that has occupied your brain.
You're focused on that. You're still going through the actions of other things, but your focus is on the failure. The setback instead of completion and one missed landing becomes five missed landings, figuratively speaking.
So what I want you to understand is that a real professional, a really great shop owner doesn't let these things linger. They don't let 'em linger. They compartmentalize and they go, hey, that was a mistake. Now I gotta finish the program. Just get up, finish the program, and then later on when we're calmer, we can sit back.
We can review what happened and then fix it. That's really what it all is about. So you learn. You correct. And then you let it go.
Okay, so here's my just one thing for you this week. So here's what I want you to ask yourself.
Is this completion time or contemplation time? Right. If it's time to get done, if it's the execution time, if it's completion time, then it's time to finish the routine. Just get the day done in a positive way. Just get up, keep going, get up, keep going. Then later with a cooler head, now you can step back.
You can analyze, and you can make a plan to improve. It's always, always, always completion before contemplation. If this hit with you and you would like some more help with this, just let me know.
Reach out to [email protected] and I would be happy to help you. Let's have a conversation and let's see what's going on.
Okay, everybody, I want to say God bless. I wanna say thank you and I wanna tell you have a great week and go make some money. Take care. Bye-bye.
