The Secret

Recently, I was watching a Netflix special on “The Secret.” You know what I'm talking about? This is the law of attraction. If you listen to it in its truest sense, a lot of people walk away from it thinking that all they need to do is think about something and it will manifest itself in their lives. I believe in the law of attraction. I don't believe in the theory that if you think about it, it will manifest itself. That doesn't happen. I'm going to ask you for a favor. I'm going to say something and I want you just to tell me what you're thinking about when I say it.
I want to ask you to clear your head for just one minute. I promise this is going to make a difference and it's going to be pretty powerful. Are you ready? Get ready? Don't think about blue elephant. Don't think about blue elephant. Don't think about blue elephant. Don't think about blue elephant. When I say that, what are you thinking about? Daniel said, “blue elephants,” Phil said, “blue elephants.” That's exactly right. This is my opinion. Based on years of reading and introspection and studying our minds are goal seeking missiles and whatever you're focused on, whether you're aware of it or not, that is what your mind creates through actions, words, deeds, thoughts, feelings, etc. So now here's why “ don't think blue elephants” is really important.
How many times have you gone to a job or to call a customer and you're going to do something pretty momentous and you're thinking, “Don't screw up, don't screw up, don't screw up, don't screw up, don't screw up”? What are you focused on? You're going to fix a vehicle, don't screw up. What's going to happen? Your focus is actually on screwing up. There's a really great audio program. It's called “The Strangest Secret” by your Earl Nightingale. It's 36 minutes long. I've talked about it before you can get it on YouTube. I believe the secret is when you put a definite purpose in your mind, a definite destination in your head, your mind starts to see things that it did not see before.
There's a really cool device in your brain called the reticular activating system. You take about 250 million bits of information per second into your brain, through our senses. But your brain is only able to deal with 50 bits per second. This reticular activating system, RAS for short, filters out a lot of information. For example, if I said, “Hey, what's your left ear feeling right now?” You weren't aware of it until just this second. All of a sudden you can feel your left ear. There's a lot of stuff you're not aware of. And that has an impact. Whatever you're thinking about, whatever you're focused on, that's kind of the command to your RAS to be looking for.
When you start thinking, “Don't screw up, don't screw up, don't screw up,” your brain is going to start looking for stuff that will screw you up. When you think don't fail you are focused on failing. Now, all of a sudden, you just see stuff that's failing. You see stuff that's wrong. You see stuff that isn't working out. You can change your focus, change what you're looking for, and your brain will start finding things that will either support or help you achieve it. Let me give you an example. Think about a time you bought a vehicle, and I've used this example before, but it's such a great one. You buy a new vehicle. And then all of a sudden you're driving around, and you see all these vehicles that are the same kind.
Why? Not everybody went out and bought the same vehicle the same day. That didn't happen. What did happen? All of a sudden you bought a vehicle, and you sent a silent signal to your brain and said, “Hey, this is important to me.” Now, you're seeing more of them. When you start thinking opportunity, when you start thinking growth, when you start thinking abundance, your brain is going to start looking for those opportunities that have been there all the time that you have not seen based on your prior focus. So, the secret is this, the first thing to do is think about what you want, not what you don't want. Don't think failure, think success. Don't think don't fail. Think succeed. Don't think don't screw it up, do it right. I'm going to do this right. How am I going to do this right?
This makes all the difference in the world. First thing, focus. Second thing is recognize that you really got to believe it. Like this is possible. Third thing is, be open to it. Be open to the opportunities. You got to start being able to see them. Be open to them. And then here's the last thing. The secret almost makes you believe that you could do anything. I'm overweight and I'm going to visualize being healthy. And the secret is going to make that manifest in my life. Well, I got to tell you something. If you do that and then sit on the couch and binge watch Netflix, eating potato chips and ice cream, the secret isn’t going to help. Focus. Believe it's possible. See the opportunities and then take massive action. That's the fourth thing. Take massive action.
