Why Fighting Reality Keeps Auto Repair Shop Owners Stuck
Accepting reality does not mean giving up. It means getting honest about where you are so you can decide what to do next.
Every shop owner has experienced one of those days. A technician gives notice with little warning. A customer leaves a one-star review after your team worked hard to make things right. Parts do not arrive when they are supposed to, sales are slower than expected, and suddenly you are questioning everything you are doing.
It is frustrating, and if we are honest, most of us respond the same way. We argue with reality. We tell ourselves it should not have happened, replay the conversation in our heads, wonder why these things always seem to happen to us, and spend hours explaining why the situation is not fair.
The problem is that none of those thoughts change what already happened. Reality does not change because we disagree with it. The moment we stop fighting where we are is the moment we can finally decide where we are going.
Reality is not your enemy. Reality is your starting point.
There Is a Difference Between Reflecting and Replaying
One of the most important distinctions I have learned as a business owner and coach is the difference between reflecting and replaying. Reflection is healthy. It helps us grow because it asks questions that move us forward. Replay is different because it keeps us trapped in the same conversation with ourselves.
- “This should not have happened.”
- “I cannot believe this.”
- “Why does this always happen to me?”
Those thoughts do not solve problems. They simply keep us emotionally attached to something we cannot change. Reflection asks better questions because it gives us something useful to work with.
- What happened?
- Why did it happen?
- What can I learn?
- What needs to change?
One creates progress. The other creates paralysis. As shop owners, we do not have the luxury of staying stuck. Our team is watching, our customers are depending on us, and our business needs us to keep moving forward.
Acceptance Is Not Giving Up
When I talk about accepting reality, some people immediately think that means settling for less. That is not what acceptance means at all. Acceptance does not mean you like what happened, approve of it, or stop trying to improve your situation.
Acceptance simply means acknowledging where you are today. Think about the GPS in your vehicle. Before it can tell you how to get where you want to go, it has to know your current location.
Your business works exactly the same way. Until you are honest about where you are today, you cannot build a plan that gets you somewhere better tomorrow.
Acceptance does not remove your responsibility. It gives you a clear place to begin.
Better Questions Create Better Businesses
Once you stop arguing with reality, something interesting happens. Your mind finally has room to think differently. Instead of asking, “Why me?” you begin asking, “What can I learn?” Instead of looking for someone to blame, you begin asking, “What needs to change?”
Instead of convincing yourself the problem is impossible, you start asking, “What is my next best move?” Those questions completely change the conversation.
As a coach, I have listened to thousands of shop owners describe the challenges they are facing. Sometimes they are frustrated with employees. Sometimes it is customers, vendors, the economy, or simply bad luck. Those problems are real, and owning an auto repair shop is hard.
But I have noticed something over the years. Many owners are not really searching for solutions. They are searching for validation. They want someone to tell them they are right for feeling stuck.
Maybe they are right. Business is hard. But being right about why you are stuck does not help you move forward. Ownership does.
What am I going to do now?
Every Challenge Carries a Lesson
I have become convinced that every challenge has something to teach us. Sometimes the lesson is about leadership. Sometimes it is about hiring better, improving systems, communication, patience, resilience, or simply recognizing that not everything is within our control.
The only things you truly control are what is inside your own skin:
Everything else is influence. If you spend all your energy fighting reality, you miss the lesson.
Life has a funny way of working. In school, you get the lesson first and then the test. Life works the other way around. You get the test first, and then you discover the lesson.
If you do not learn it, life usually gives you another opportunity. Maybe that is why some business challenges seem to repeat themselves. The lesson is still waiting to be learned.
The Greatest Reward Is Not the Business
I love seeing shop owners become more profitable. I love watching businesses grow, seeing owners build stronger teams, and watching them enjoy more freedom. But after years of coaching, I do not believe those are the greatest rewards of owning a business.
The greatest reward is who you become while building it. Every difficult employee teaches leadership. Every setback develops resilience. Every hard decision builds confidence.
Your business is not simply producing income. It is producing the leader your business needs. Growth in your business almost always follows growth in yourself.
Stop Fighting What Happened and Decide What Happens Next
The next time something does not go according to plan, pause before reacting. Instead of saying, “This should not be happening,” ask yourself three simple questions:
- What is true?
- What can I learn?
- What is my next best move?
Those three questions can completely change how you approach challenges, lead your team, and build your business. Remember, reality is not your enemy. It is simply the place where progress begins.
