Auto Repair Shop Owners: Are you LOST?

Are You Lost?

by Rick White, President 180BIZ                                                             (Estimated Read Time 5 minutes)

I want to talk about this feeling of lost. I've been talking so much about new beginnings, growth, and gratitude lately.  Some people tell me, “But Rick, I'm lost. I don't know what to do. I don't know where to go.” I want us to step back and think about the word LOST for just a moment. I don't think you're lost. For you to be lost, you don’t know where you are. That is the definition of lost. But I guarantee you know where you are. You may not like it. It may hurt. It may be uncomfortable. You may want to be in a different place, but you know where you are. You are not lost.

Lost is merely a state of mind.

Someone asked John Muir in an interview about being lost in the woods. John Muir said I've never been lost. I've been a little confused for a couple of days, but I've never been lost. See, I think lost is merely a state of mind. It's a state of presence. It's not being tied into something more. It's not lost. Being lost means you don't know where you are. You know where you are. You're intimately aware of where you are. What you don't know is where you're going.

Uncertainty, skepticism, and fear are holding you back.

Where's that coming from? It's coming from uncertainty. You are uncertain about where you want to go. Or you are skeptical or scared. Those are the three things holding you back right now. I could be one of them or a combination of them. You could be uncertain and scared. You could be uncertain, skeptical, and scared. It could be all of them. It could be this really dangerous cocktail, but what you're doing is you're telling yourself you're lost. I like the idea of I'm not lost. I just don't know where I want to go, because for me, that gives me some peace. It gives me a chance to say, “Okay, I'm here”.

Don’t build your future with your past.

And then the next thing is, where do I want to go? Uncertainty, skepticism, and scared. Those are all coming from your past. Those are things that are behind you, and you're allowing past events to dictate your future plans, and your future dreams.  Don't build your future with your past because your past is filled with limits, regret, and disappointment. You got your butt kicked, right? That's the truth. We all do, but for some of us, we stop, and we stare at the butt-kicking, and we think, “Okay, this is as far as we can go. ”And that absolutely is not true. It's simply a lesson. You're going to hear me say this a lot. Anything that happened to you in the past is simply an event. It's a lesson.

Pain is a given, suffering is a choice.

I heard Tony Robbins once say that pain is a given, but suffering is a choice. And what he means by that is we all will get knocked down. We all will get kicked. We all will get punched in the face by life.  Getting knocked down is a given, but staying down, that's a choice. I don't want you to build your future from your past. I want you to build it from your future. I don't want you to be staring at your problems as you're building your future. I want you to recognize where you are. Then I want you to dream something really big. I want you to dream something that means something to you. So what I want you to do is build your future with your future. When we were kids, dreaming was easy. Dreaming was natural. Dreaming was second nature. How many times did you get caught in school staring out a window a million miles away?

Create an amazing future with something that excites you.

You're not supposed to come into this year disappointed, defeated, bitter, angry, and giving up. You're supposed to come into this year, taking a break, learning from the past, and then creating an amazing future. Something that just excites the crap out of you. And guess what's going to happen this year? You're going to get kicked. You're going to get punched. But instead of beating yourself up over it, instead of taking it internally and thinking it's because you are a terrible person, step back, learn the lesson, and then move on.

The word for this year is RESILIENCE.

Let's make the word of the year resilience and persistence. It's like watching a rocky. He gets knocked down, he bounces back up, gets knocked down, he bounces back up. That's what I want you to do this year. I want you to create an ambitious outcome for yourself this year. Something huge and special for you. Don't let uncertainty, skepticism, or being scared stop you from creating the life that you're designed to create. I believe that when we die, as I heard this from Ed Millet, and I thought this is amazing. He said, “I think God is going to show us who we could have become” and like Ed, my goal is to become the version of me as close to that as possible, and I hope you are too.
